Understanding the technologies that power “AI”—a product-owner’s guide

There are a class of product features that make products different today than their physical or classic digital counterparts. Often they live quietly below our cursors, fingers or mouse-hovers, only throwing us off when they don’t behave as expected. This subtlety is deceptive though. Features from personalized recommendations and intelligent autofill; to user fraud detection and dynamic creative optimization have led to the massive stickiness of the modern web, and have changed the way products are built.

Having a basic understanding of the technologies and strategies that underpin these types of features, helps considerably throughout the feature development life-cycle; making it possible to design feedback loops in a way that is both flexible and leads to products that “self-improve” with more use.

In this talk I’ll discuss Condé Nast’s approach to AI-driven feature development and walk through some of the AI-driven features we’ve built across our editorial, advertising and video product portfolios. I'll also highlight the underlying infrastructure and product development habits that make these features possible.

Transformation: Beyond Control

The majority of digital transformations are failing. It's not because people don't understand Scrum but because they are failing to transform their heads and their hearts as they approach new ways of working.

Event Storming: Build The Right Thing, Right

Building software which meets the requirements of the business has been and still remains quite the challenge. So much so in fact, that "build the thing right" and "build the right thing", are both phrases used in software development to emphasize perspectives, and in extent challenges in analysis and development of a product. To our aid, comes Event storming.

Event storming is a workshop which helps everyone in the product-building team to reach a shared understanding of the domain, but also helps us establish what needs to be built and how, by creating a model of the software in a format which is verifiable by our subject matter experts. At the same time, Event Storming can help us discover our inherent service boundaries, which is the biggest source of risk in a microservices architecture.

In this talk Savvas will go through a short history of dysfunctional processes, before explaining how Event Storming addresses them. By the end of the talk you should know:

  • What problems does Event Storming solve
  • What are the different types of event storming
  • Who should be involved in each one
  • What is the expected outcome of each level
Taking Back “Software Engineering”: Craftsmanship Is Not Enough

Would you fly in a plane designed by a craftsman or would you prefer your aircraft to be designed by engineers?
The term "Software Engineering" has gained a bad reputation. It implies "big up-front design" and "mathematically provable models" in place of working code. However, that is down to our interpretation and not a problem with "engineering" as a discipline.
Maybe it is time for us to start thinking about retrieving the term "Software Engineering" and define what our "Engineering" discipline should entail.

A Whole Team Approach To Testing In Continuous Delivery: One Tester's Journey

It’s not uncommon for teams moving towards continuous delivery to face a growing backlog of customer-reported bugs. It’s a challenge to maintain the cadence of frequent deployments. If a team has testers, they’re often expected to continue to do all the testing activities, without any thought as to how those fit into continuous delivery (CD) or continuous deployment (also CD). Teams without testing specialists often struggle with insufficient automated test coverage and inadequate exploratory testing.

In this session, Lisa shares her experiences with a team striving to deploy smaller changes more frequently. Her team’s challenges are common ones. They came up with some innovative experiments to find ways to deploy more frequently with confidence. Lisa will introduce some techniques to consider trying, including:

  • Visualizing deployment pipelines to shorten feedback loops and fit in testing activities
  • Using a test suite canvas to determine the minimum automate test
  • Ways to analyze risks and determine next steps to mitigate them
  • Ways testing specialists contribute to team success
Designing The Design Critique

Teaching Teams That Make Games A New Way To Play

Nowadays, it seems like everyone says they "put their users first" and “user experience is everyone’s job” but, like “I should go to the gym”, there’s a chasm between intention and action. To create lasting change, you need to adjust a team’s behavior and reboot their mindset. The good news is that designing a new way of working is a lot like designing a product: just swap out your end users and swap in your team members.
Chris Grant from King has spent the last 5 years leading a "player-centered" revolution at King. In this talk, he'll give practical examples of how he's used his UX and Product toolbox with internal “team users” to motivate them to design, test and work as cross-functional teams united by player-centric goals.

  • How to drive change in your teams
  • What to do when it doesn't always work

What Language Do You Speak?

As Product Managers, we need to ensure we're building great products to satisfy a user need or solve a problem.
For this, we need to understand our users and stakeholders, make sense of data, understand tech and business implications, communicate and translate information across different teams.
We need to speak the ‘right language’ in order to be successful PMs. But what does it mean?
On one hand, through working on global products and platforms, as part of multicultural teams, I learned I was at an advantage for being multilingual. I was able to understand our users and align with them, be the voice of our users towards my teams and stakeholders, and ensure our products were of quality across different regions.
On the other hand, as PMs, we’re the connectors between different people and roles: users, designers, senior management, engineers, data scientists and they each communicate differently.
My talk covers contexts in which PMs need to speak different languages, with practical examples, spiced with a few 'no-nos' and suggestions on how to adapt our language depending on the groups we’re interacting with.
We’ll understand what 'speaking the right language' means for a PM and that it can be a 'make or break' our products.

Continuous Delivery And Continuous Design

In the modern world of business, companies are becoming ever more concerned with the experience of their users. In this talk we would like to present our vision of DevOps as a means to reach your goal. We will explain how the Liquid Studio has implemented a modern tech-stack adapted for modern software development that continuously delivers increments of functionality to our users. With increasing competition in the market, companies need to be able to deliver user centric functionalities to their applications in the shortest time possible. Hacking Within An Enterprise: From Startups To Intrapreneurship

Coming from a startup background, the shift to enterprise Product Management can be dizzying. How can we apply tactics from a startup world to an enterprise that has 42 million users?
Let’s take a look at how to leverage the strengths of an enterprise while also being able to move more nimbly to launch a successful product.

Unity, Not Uniformity With Design Systems

When you’re creating global products with hundreds of designers working in many locations around the world, maintaining brand unity with a design language system is a Herculean challenge. Yet with today’s consumers, size is no excuse. All companies, from small start-ups to enormous global organizations, are expected to offer the same seamless and coherent brand experiences.
In this session, learn how to remove the barriers to creativity and unlock innovation in your organisation by inspiring unity, not uniformity, with your design language system.

Evolving A Mature Product

How do you make changes to a product that millions of customers are already using?
Product managing a mature product is a very different beast from building one from scratch particularly when your internal stakeholders, like policy and ops, depend on it working a certain way.
In her talk, Parul discusses the unique challenges that evolving a mature product poses and shares a few practical lessons she has learned to get ahead of them.

To OKR, Or Not To OKR

For the past few years, tech companies have been adopting OKRs as a silver bullet for a number of organizational problems. While it certainly has had a positive impact for some teams/companies, it has also become a common source of frustration among tech teams and it’s often used for the wrong reasons.
In this session, Flavia Neves will discuss how FREENOW has navigated the OKR process, what pitfalls they tried to avoid and what they learned throughout the way.

Designing, Implementing, And Analysing Product Experiments

People say that it's difficult to come up with ideas worth testing, that implementing a randomised controlled experiment is complicated, and that you need math skills to analyse the results. These are dirty filthy lies!
In this talk, Cian will give you the knowledge and tools required to quickly experiment, allowing you to build a demonstrably more useful product.

  • How Hubspot do quick-iteration product experimentation
  • How to bring these methods to your organisation
